Tracey, having strolled into Potions like she was the queen of that particular domain, made her way to her normal seat right at the very front of the class. Unlike in most of her other classes, she was always engaged and attentive in this one. She was one of Slughorn’s favorite students and she wanted to keep it that way. After all, as one of his chosen ones, Tracey was able to get access to potions stores as well as the coveted invitations to the “Slug Club” gatherings.

Sitting down, she began to unpack her things only half listening to that day’s plan. She had to suppress a groan as Professor Slughorn announced they would have a partner for that day’s potion. “Great,” she muttered, thinking that there were only a few people who would be up to her standards and none of them would do her reputation any good to be paired with! Merlin, with her luck she'd be paired off with Hermione Granger or someone like that!

"Tut, tut," Slugborn huffed as he waddled to the front of his desk. "I am going to assign partners," he began. "Everyone stand up so I can partner you off. Miss Davis," Slughorn said with an affectionate smile at her. "And...Miss Greengrass will be your partner."

She was not surprised, nor greatly disappointed, when she heard that she was with a fellow Slytherin. However, Daphne Greengrass wasn't someone she really wished to be paired with. In the past, she had done her best to steer clear of her after hearing rumors of Daphne snogging a girl at one of the Quidditch parties. Then a different one just before Christmas break...

No, she was afraid already that people might have suspected things about her. She didn't need to associate with someone like Daphne to make things more difficult! Besides, if she remember correctly, Daphne was hardly considered a Potions prodigy.

Deciding it would be best to be at the back, that way Slughorn was less likely to notice Tracey was doing all the work, she gathered her things and stood. Walking over to Daphne’s table, she eyed the bloke in the seat Daphne. The fawning boy didn't seem to follow Slughorn's instructions an that annoyed Tracey. It annoyed her doubly that he was in her seat. Her annoyed glare caused the boy to move after a short bit.

Sitting down, she regarded Daphne for a few moments. “Hello,” Tracey greeted her in an even tone. Taking her cauldron and other potions tools out of her bag, she began to set them up on the table.
